Director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[two] The story was partly inspired by his own experiences every bit a musician in a band,[ii] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of tape labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan's character.[iv] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Can a Song Save Your Life?, before he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to piece of work the music around the story, instead of the other way around."[4] The script'southward style of featuring songs equally a natural element of the story was inspired by the 1954 Judy Garland musical flick A Star Is Born, and is also employed in Carney's earlier moving picture Once (2007).[5] Carney first pitched the moving-picture show in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the motion picture alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the film's US$8 1000000 budget.[2]

Before casting Keira Knightley equally Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop singer such as Adele in the main role, as well as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at ane point attached to the project.[2] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role past training with a song autobus and learning how to play a guitar.[7] Mark Ruffalo was Carney'due south starting time selection for the role of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the motion-picture show afterwards Carney sent him the first typhoon of the screenplay.[half-dozen] Singer Adam Levine was as well the merely person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the role after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[8] he declined to be paid for actualization in the film.[ix] Although he had had minor acting parts on television before, Begin Again marked his first role in a picture.[8] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the film after admiring Corden's performance in the pb role in a Broadway production of One Man, Two Guvnors.[x]

Master photography of the film began in New York Urban center on July ii, 2012,[11] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to moving picture in Manhattan's bottom known neighborhoods that would be more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Hamlet, the Eastward Hamlet, Times Foursquare, and Washington Square Park.[13] [14] Rather than performing live during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In guild to save coin on hiring a full crew and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Foursquare—were shot belatedly at night with a handheld camera.[ii] The rooftop location near the Empire State Building is located at 28 West 36th St.[xv] [sixteen] [17] [18]

Carney'due south criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a serial of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'southward operation and comportment while making Begin Again. When asked near the critical reaction to Sing Street by The Contained, Carney responded unprompted that "information technology's a minor personal picture show with no Keira Knightleys in it. It'south really rewarding."[xix] In the aforementioned interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly as a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, maxim "I'll never brand a motion picture with supermodels again." He also criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, saying, "I just think with Keira it was similar asking her to practice something that she could not do."[20] Though he did not specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "experience of working, let's confront it, with a model on my final picture show".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her later Carney's comments.[22]

Carney afterwards tweeted a public apology saying he felt like "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "nothing but professional and dedicated" during the filming of the movie.[23]

In 2019, when asked about Carney'southward comments, Knightley accustomed his apology and revealed that she was not shocked by his earlier comments as they had non gotten forth during filming.[24] [25]
